This is the first post of Eco Farm La Rana Roja. We want to tell you the story why we chose this name even thought it’s a very popular business name in Costa Rica and why we call it an eco farm and not for example a permaculture farm.
When people hear the name La Rana Roja (The Red Frog), many smile knowingly. It’s a common name in Costa Rica—restaurants, cabins, hostels, even surf shops proudly carry it. So why did we choose such a “popular” name for our farm?
For us, La Rana Roja is much more than a catchy phrase—it’s a symbol, a story, and a reflection of what we want this place to stand for.
The Symbol of the Red Frog
The red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) and the strawberry poison dart frog (Oophaga pumilio) are some of Costa Rica’s most iconic species. They are small, vibrant, and resilient—just like we imagine our project to be. The frog is a messenger of the forest, a sign of a healthy ecosystem, and a reminder of the delicate balance that sustains life here in the tropics.
So while La Rana Roja might sound familiar, for us it carries personal meaning. It connects our farm to the land, to Costa Rica’s biodiversity, and to a creature that locals and travelers alike instantly recognize.
Why Eco Farm and Not Permaculture Farm?
Another question we often hear is: why do we call it an eco farm? After all, we practice principles of permaculture, regenerative farming, and sustainable living. Wouldn’t “Permaculture Farm” be more specific?
Here’s the thing: we wanted a name that feels welcoming and clear to everyone. The word eco is simple, universal, and immediately sparks curiosity. It tells people, whether they are locals or visitors from abroad, that this is a place where nature is respected and where living in harmony with the environment comes first. It also can be used as an acronym of Educating,
Permaculture is at the heart of what we do, but not everyone is familiar with the term. By calling ourselves an eco farm, we invite more people into the conversation. Once they arrive, we can share with them the deeper layers—how permaculture shapes our gardens, how regenerative practices heal the soil, and how every small choice is guided by the idea of sustainability.
A Name with Roots
In the end, La Rana Roja Eco Farm is both common and unique. Common because it belongs to Costa Rica’s cultural landscape; unique because it’s rooted in our own story and vision.
Our name carries the sound of the forest at night, the flash of red on a rainy day, the laughter of visitors discovering the farm, and our hope that this place can inspire others to live more closely connected to nature.
So yes, you’ll find many La Rana Rojas in Costa Rica. But this one is ours—and we can’t wait to share it with you.
