About us

Where Education, Ecology & Connection Meet

Hola — welcome! We’re Mag and Jerry, the duo behind La Rana Roja, a private eco-farm founded in March 2023, nestled between the rainforest and the Caribbean coast near Tortuguero National Park. We’re not just a farm — we’re a living, breathing classroom where nature speaks, and you’re invited to listen. Inspired by the tiny red poison dart frog—an indicator of clean, chemical-free land—we built our farm as a sanctuary for both wildlife and mindful learning.

At La Rana Roja, we blend ecological sustainability, education, and cultural exchange to create one-of-a-kind experiences. Whether you’re spotting sloths and monkeys, learning how vanilla grows, chewing on fresh sugar cane, every visit invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the natural world.

Our Story & Mission

  • Mag brings a global perspective. Originally from Poland, with nearly 15 years of living abroad, she studied Ecotourism in the Netherlands, lived in Malaysia for a while and has led experiential learning programs worldwide. Her vision: to invite travelers, students, and families into deeper relationship with the land.
  • Jerry, a native of Parismina, studied Natural Sciences at the National University of Costa Rica and once worked as a high school science teacher. In 2001, he began a community-led turtle conservation project and later started researching native vanilla. Through both scientific and indigenous knowledge, Jerry shares the biodiversity and cultural stories of his region.

Together, we created La Rana Roja to EDUCATE, CONSERVE, and OPEN EYES—sharing knowledge to help people feel love for nature and make more thoughtful choices in daily life.

What We Offer

At La Rana Roja, we combine eco-tourism, education, and cultural experience in a unique way:

  • Private and group Farm & Wildlife Tours: Walk through jungle trails to see sloths, monkeys, red-eyed tree frogs, and more while learning about agroecology, sustainable farming, and medicinal plants. Learn the secrets of the jungle with us.
  • River Boat Tours & Turtle Night Walks (March–October): Explore the canals near Tortuguero National Park, spot crocodiles, birds, and witness sea turtles nesting or hatching.
  • Spanish + Nature Immersion Programs: A one-of-a-kind retreat where learners practice Spanish through jungle vocabulary, cooking, storytelling, and interactive farm activities—fun for families, homeschoolers, and student groups.
  • Group Travel & Educational Retreats: Custom-designed itineraries for school programs, university field trips, wellness retreats, and cultural exchanges. Every program is crafted to combine learning, connection, and local experiences.
  • Yoga and wellness retreats: It’s a perfect place to connect to nature, the sounds, the flavors, the colors. It is where you can breathe, relax and connect with yourself.

We love creating welcoming, tailored experiences for visitors from around the world.

What Makes Us Unique

  • A farm rooted in regenerative and agroforestry practices, free from pesticides, inspired by the poison dart frog ecosystem.
  • A family-led and bilingual environment, perfect for improving Spanish skills. Mag also speaks Polish and Dutch.
  • A holistic blend of science, culture, and hands-on learning, created by educators and ecologists who love nature deeply.
  • Flexible, private and small group experiences—no crowds, maximum attention, and tailored value that supports both visitors and conservation.
  • Deeply involved in turtle conservation, Jerry is a co-founder of the turtle association in the village.

Why We Love What We Do

We believe that you can’t love what you don’t know. Our goal is to open hearts and minds by teaching people how the jungle operates: through the soil that feeds fruit, to the amphibians that reflect ecosystem health, to the ancient knowledge woven into local traditions. And how everything is connected and what we do on land influences sea turtles as well. We strive to spark small daily changes/choices that collectively protect our planet and nurture our soul.
