La Rana Roja, Costa Rica

Did You Know that…?
Conventional farming and plowing release enormous amounts of carbon into the atmosphere every year—millions of tons that should be safely stored in the soil. Industrial agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change, while also damaging ecosystems and biodiversity.
At La Rana Roja Eco Farm in Costa Rica, we believe farming can—and must—be different. Through regenerative agriculture, sustainable farming, and eco tourism, we show visitors that farming can protect biodiversity instead of harming it, support local communities, and produce delicious, healthy food in the process.
The Problem with Monocultures in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is home to 5–6% of the world’s biodiversity, yet around 2% of the country’s land is covered in banana and pineapple monocultures. These large-scale plantations rely heavily on pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which not only pollute rivers and soils but also create health problems for local communities and destroy habitats for wildlife.
In the area around Parismina, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, vast banana farms dominate the landscape. The chemicals used wash into waterways, affecting people, animals, and ecosystems downstream—including fragile coastal areas and turtle nesting beaches in the Caribbean cost of Costa Rica, including areas near to Tortuguero National Park.
Beyond environmental damage, monocultures also cause social issues, as communities often depend on unstable agricultural jobs while losing food sovereignty and traditional farming knowledge.
At La Rana Roja Eco Farm, we work in the opposite way. Instead of growing just one crop, we nurture diverse food forests where vanilla, cacao, tropical fruits, root crops, and medicinal plants coexist with native trees. Diversity makes the land more resilient, reduces the need for chemicals, and ensures that farming supports—not destroys—the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica.
Why We Started Our Eco Farm in Costa Rica
Our eco farm in Parismina was born from a deep love for nature and a desire to protect it. Over the years, working with educational groups, traveling around the world, participating in turtle conservation Costa Rica, and experiencing firsthand the consequences of unsustainable farming, we realized that true change begins at the roots—literally, in the soil.
That’s why we committed ourselves to sustainable development, turtle conservation, and creating a farm where everything is protected and connected. For us, farming is not just about growing food—it’s about regenerating the Earth and living in harmony with it.
Why the Name “La Rana Roja”?
“La Rana Roja” means The Red Frog in Spanish. The red dart frog lives here on our land, and its presence is the best proof that our farm is 100% chemical-free. These tiny, brightly colored frogs are incredibly sensitive to toxins—if pesticides or chemical fertilizers were used, they simply wouldn’t survive.
For us, the frog is not only our namesake but also a symbol of the health and balance of our ecosystem—and of the future we want for farming in Costa Rica.
Our Farm in Practice – Regenerative Agriculture in Costa Rica
We combine permaculture, agroforestry, biomass cycles, and other regenerative organic methods to protect the soil and nurture biodiversity. By planting in layers and protecting natural habitats, we create a food forest where everything has its place—from towering fruit trees to the smallest medicinal herbs.
🌱 What We Grow at La Rana Roja Eco Farm
- Vanilla – our long-term passion plant and the queen of our farm. Parismina is one of the last places where natural pollinators take care of vanilla flowers. It’s also where a new species of vanilla was found with the help of Jerry.
- Tropical fruits – cacao, bananas, papayas, pineapples, mangos, lemons, coconuts, and more.
- Root crops and traditional staples – essential for food sovereignty and local culture.
- Medicinal and herbal plants – a wide variety used in traditional natural medicine.
- Native trees – protecting soil, water, and wildlife.
At the moment, our land is home to [XX] species of trees—each one a vital part of our living ecosystem. We believe regenerative agriculture is the answer to many of today’s challenges. By using organic methods such as microorganisms and natural fertilizers, we ensure sustainable farming and development in Costa Rica.
